Summary #522

Metal foam stops .50 Caliber rounds as well as steel – at less than half the weight
  • Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed foam with hollow metal spheres embedded in a metallic matrix of steel and other metals.
  • Tests indicate that this lightweight foam armor is as effective as solid steel armor to stop the impact of rounds of 0.50 caliber ammunition.
  • The foam can be used to manufacture safe and less heavy military vehicles.
  • In addition, this metallic foam can be useful for manufacturing protective barriers against fire, heat, gamma rays, X-rays and other atomic radiations.
